About a year ago, I noticed that whenever I cooked something with a strong smell, the odor would spread throughout the whole house and linger for a long time.
It made me think that we might have issues with indoor air quality. If smells were getting trapped in the house, I assumed that dust, dander, pollen bacteria and other toxins were also contained inside. With all of the recent issues with covid, I worried about the health of our living environment. I called up a local HVAC contractor and asked them to complete testing and provide recommendations. The technician inspected the furnace, air conditioner and ductwork and found a considerable buildup of dust inside the equipment. He completed a full cleaning and suggested that I replace air filters more often. He also told me about the benefits of in-duct air purifiers. This type of purifier treats the air as it passes through the ducts. It also sends ions into the house that kills pathogens and causes particles to clump together and fall out of the air. I now make sure to have the furnace and air conditioner professionally cleaned every year. I am diligent about replacing air filters every six weeks. By taking better care of the heating and cooling system, I am hoping that it will operate more reliably, last longer and provide better comfort. Since installing the air purifier, I’ve noticed the house stays a lot cleaner. I don’t need to vacuum or dust as often and cooking odors no longer hang around. I have a lot more confidence in the quality of our breathing air.
