A couple of years ago, my daughter decided to move even farther south than where we already lived. She moved about 5 hours south to a beautiful city down in the southern half of our state. When she got down there, though, and started Living even farther south than she was accustomed to, she quickly learned that the most important thing in a house down there is the air conditioning unit. The house did have Central Heating and cooling. Just about every house nowadays does have that, and if it does not, like if it just has a window AC unit or something, there is a big discount given on the price of that house in order to sell it. Anyway, the house is also built in a traditional way to allow it to stay cooler. For example, it is constructed of a CBS block. CBS block is a good insulator and keeps the heat out and keeps the air conditioning in. Even so, it was costing her a fortune trying to keep the AC running enough to have a comfortable thermostat reading all day. She works out of her house, as well, so it’s not like she can go to the office and use their HVAC system for free. I recommended to her that she supplement her Central Heating and Cooling with a mini split AC unit. I know a few people who have them, and they are very nice. The little AC units are easy to install, inexpensive, efficient, and super quiet. my daughter decided, though, that she was just going to get a window AC unit, so that’s what she did. She added just this one little AC unit to her bedroom window so that her HVAC system didn’t have to work quite as hard to keep the thermostat where she likes it. Even though it seems kind of old-fashioned to me, it seems to serve her well.
