Sometimes when life slows down, I sit back and relax and think about everything.
This happened a lot especially when we were in quarantine.
Mostly, I thought about my childhood and what life was like back then. As a kid, I grew up in a normal household with 2 working parents. We weren’t rich by any means, but we did have certain luxuries that some of my other friends didn’t have. One of which was that we had 2 window air conditioner units inside our 2-bedroom apartment. At the time, window air conditioners were a luxury item. In fact, having any form of air conditioning was a big deal. Pretty much all of the buildings in my neighborhood were built before residential central air conditioning became a widely used system. So, many homes used fans during the warmer months, and for the houses with air conditioners, we turned them on only during the nighttime hours. I can remember the window air conditioner that we had, and they were second-hand units that my dad received from the company that he worked for. They weren’t the best air conditioners, but they kept us cool during those warm Summer nights. I can recall how noisy the air conditioners were and if we used them for too long, they would end up freezing up. Perhaps that was normal for the technology at the time, I can’t be sure. Either way, currently, I live in a nice home with central air conditioning, and I am grateful that I had those experiences as a kid because they make me appreciate the luxuries that I enjoy as an adult.
