If I could give anybody one piece of advice when it comes to building a house from scratch, it would be to stay involved.
This was the advice I received from people I knew when my wife and I decided to build our retirement home. We made the home build project the focus of our life for sure. Ground wasn’t even broken until we upgraded the HVAC equipment in the family home and got it sold. We then moved to a rental unit while the house was being built. Both of us were newly retired so we made sure that at least one, if not both of us, were onsite each day. And this proved to be important because we were able to weigh in on some key decisions. This was something I really appreciated about our contractor. He encouraged our input. So we sat in on meetings with people like the HVAC contractor. Not only was it nice to be able to gauge a subcontractor’s professionalism and expertise, we got to know them. And they knew that we would be there if there were questions we could answer. My wife and I were very familiar with the quality heating and air design for the house. Additionally, we had discussed the options we felt best about when it came to the actual HVAC equipment. Once the HVAC contractor was onsite, we chose the exact models with the HVAC technology we most wanted. From there, it was pretty easy really. The HVAC contractor was so on top of it that we simply enjoyed watching him and the HVAC technicians do their work. And now, we have the best heating and cooling we have ever experienced.
