When we first bought our house, it needed a great deal of work.
It is a very old house and the former owners neglected to make any upgrades or even keep up with essential repairs.
We were faced with a leaky roof, a lack of insulation and windows that needed to be replaced. All of the appliances were outdated and efficient, and there was quite a bit of water damage to deal with. We planned to do the majority of the renovations and repairs ourselves. However, we hired an HVAC contractor to inspect the boiler heating system. It was a pleasant surprise when the contractor informed us that the boiler was in good working order. It simply required standard maintenance. At that time, the boiler was linked to very old radiators located in each room. The radiators were big, ugly and took up a great deal of living space. Furniture needed to be arranged to accommodate them. Whenever the radiators operated, they became dangerously hot to the touch. We knew we wanted to get rid of the radiators and debated on our options. There are modern wall-mounted radiators that are streamlined, safe and unobtrusive. There are baseboard radiators that are mounted near the floor and circle the perimeter of the room. Although installation was a lot more work, expense and upheaval, we chose to implement radiant floor heating. The floors needed to be pulled up in order to install a network of pipes. Since the floors were badly damaged, we had already planned to replace most of them. The pipes work to transport water heated by the boiler. The heat then radiates across the surface of our brand new floors and warms everything that comes into contact. It’s a completely concealed, silent and very gentle form of heating that eliminates cold spots, drafts and stratification.
