I work part time in a comic store. Well, it used to be a comic store way back when, but it had to evolve with the times. Now the store carries games, toys, music, imported animation on disc, and books as well as comics, so I like to call it a One Stop Nerd Shop. In any event, it still operates mostly like a comic book shop, and that’s why I like working there. I get to hang out with fellow nerds during my shift, and get a discount on everything I buy. One of the most important things about working here is the thermostat for the climate control system. Before I worked in this place I was always curious as to why they kept the thermostat turned down so low all the time, and now I know. Cold temps and low humidity levels are optimum for old comics and other kinds of collectables, so the AC runs so much for their benefits, not that of the customers. If anything, the HVAC system is utilized to make people more uncomfortable, which makes sense when you think about it. When the customers are made too cold by the AC, they do not sweat or project extra moisture into the air, nor do they hang around any longer than needed. If it is nice and comfortable then more people will hang out and read comics, but the frigid AC will keep that from happening. Of course, now that I work here I need to wear a heavy sweater to work every day to offset the freezing cold air conditioning, but at least I get to read comics all day.
