My mother and I were talking about my upcoming wedding the day the HVAC technician arrived to service the furnace.
When he started talking about her and dad needing a new furnace, she stopped him.
She asked if it was really necessary to talk about the furnace right now and if he didn’t realize, they were getting ready for a wedding. The HVAC technician left his notes on the table and left, while she and I took care of the rest of the plans for the wedding that weekend. After I went up for a shower, mom must have looked at the HVAC technician’s notes. I heard her yelp as I was walking to the shower. She yelled up and asked if I had heard the HVAC tech say we needed a new furnace. I remembered him saying something, but none of it had registered. Mom asked him to talk to her about it later, but he left the note and left. She looked white as a ghost. She said dad was going to kill her for not calling him and telling him we needed a furnace. I laughed, because dad had never even raised his voice to her, as far as I knew. I told her to relax, and just discuss it with dad when he got home. When dad got home, he was upset about needing a new furnace, when they had just put out all the money for my extravagant wedding. He said that if it was necessary, he would call the bank and they could have the new furnace installed after the wedding. Right now, all he wanted to focus on was my getting married this weekend, and then they would talk about a new furnace.
