About five years ago, my husband and I purchased an older home.
The hardwood floors, intricate moldings and gorgeous staircase are all original.
We were delighted by the high ceilings, big windows and large fireplace in the living room. While the historical charm of the home appealed to us, we also wanted to implement some modern updates. The electrical lines in the house were not up to code and there was only a single outlet in most rooms. We needed to replace all of the galvanized water and drain pipes, plumbing fixtures and appliances. Because the house lacks conventional ductwork, we installed a high-velocity system to avoid damaging the plaster walls and ceilings. When we updated the heating and cooling system, I started looking into the benefits of a smart thermostat. That led me to all sorts of wireless amenities for the home, including a security system. The numerous exterior doors and big windows offer lovely curb appeal but also create a security risk. I liked the idea of glass breakage sensors, motion activated lighting and surveillance cameras. Adding automated door locks has been extremely helpful. We don’t need to worry about misplacing keys or getting locked in. We can easily unlock or lock the doors by way of an app on our phone. We can check the surveillance footage at any time and from anywhere. We also receive alerts if anyone steps onto the property. In the event of an intruder, a very loud siren would go off and my husband and I would both be notified. Unless we punch in the proper code and supply a password, the authorities are notified.
